Evaluation

BatMUD is a text-based MMO that has been running continuously since 1990 — one of the longest-lived online games ever made. The Steam store description explicitly describes it as "constantly evolving, always under further development," and the short description calls it "constantly in development since 1990." This is a living online game that, by its very nature, is never finished. The developer has maintained a steady cadence of game client updates on Steam since the game's Steam launch in November 2019. The most recent was client v1.107 on August 11, 2024, which introduced new features, library updates, error monitoring, and new background images. Prior feature updates shipped in July 2023 (v1.106) and May 2023 (v1.105). In October 2021, a new playable race — The Harpy — was added alongside a new game area, demonstrating that the underlying game world itself continues to receive meaningful new content beyond just client maintenance. The interval between major client feature releases has generally been several months to just over a year (May 2023 → July 2023 → August 2024). As of October 8, 2026, it has been approximately 14 months since the last client update (August 11, 2024). While this is longer than some prior intervals, BatMUD is fundamentally a persistent online game that runs independently of the Steam client — the game world is continuously maintained and updated on the developer's own servers. The developer has never indicated development is concluding, and the store description continues to affirm ongoing development. No announcement of a final update or end of service has been made.
