Evaluation

Beasts of Burden launched on April 6, 2022 as a free-to-play horror RPG. Shortly after launch, the developer announced a full remake of the game from the ground up, citing significant improvements needed to the code and overall design. Developer posts from January 2023, March 2023, and October 2023 all describe the remake as an ongoing project with substantial new content promised — three full acts (the current game only covers what would be the first act), additional endings, improved systems, named NPCs, save slots, and more. As of December 5, 2023, the developer was live-streaming daily development work on Twitch and appeared actively engaged. However, no official communications have been posted since December 5, 2023 — a silence now spanning over two and a half years. The developer openly acknowledged in October 2023 that development is financially constrained and that long silences followed by big updates should be expected. The studio has a pattern of going quiet due to personal and financial hardships, which they have been candid about. While this context provides some explanation for the silence, the promised remake has not shipped and there is no current confirmation that development is still actively proceeding. The current game on the store remains the original version.
Evidence
Developer describes financial hardship causing delays but announces a paying job has freed up time. Commits to a full remake with a detailed list of new features: 3 acts, multiple endings, expanded lore, semi-randomized runs, and more — all while keeping the game free.
