Biotope

Biotope is an aquarium simulator that has been in Early Access since July 23, 2019 and remains explicitly unfinished, with the developer actively working toward a future 1.0 release. In November 2022, the developer (MBL Development) separated from their publisher (2Tainment GmbH) and regained full independent control of the project. In that announcement, the team committed to continuing regular updates, creating new content, and following their roadmap toward version 1.0. Since reclaiming independence, the developer has shipped substantive updates: a major feature update (Version 2022.1) on November 21, 2022 introduced variable water volume mechanics and a new fish model; development announcements in December 2022 previewed further simulation improvements; and Version 2024.1 shipped on December 28, 2024, adding the first phase of Japanese localization, improved water displacement physics, and additional simulation refinements. The last developer communication was Version 2024.1 on December 28, 2024. As of October 8, 2026, that is approximately nine and a half months ago. The historical gap between the 2022 update push and the 2024 major update was roughly two years, establishing a slow but sustained pattern of major updates. Nine and a half months falls well within that established interval. No completion announcement, studio closure notice, or statement that 1.0 development has ended has been made. The 1.0 goal stated in November 2022 remains the developer's publicly stated destination.
