Evaluation

Birds Aren't Real: The Game is a student project developed over the course of one academic year at the University of Southern California, in collaboration with California State University Fullerton and Otis College of Art and Design. The game launched on September 8, 2023. After launch, the team voluntarily continued working on the game through the summer and released one post-launch update on September 21, 2023, which added new side quests, NPC animations, Mac and Switch controller support, and various bug fixes. That same post listed a few future plans (a progression saving system, photo mode improvements, and better Mac support), but these were informal notes — not a formal roadmap or committed deliverable — and there has been no developer communication of any kind since that September 21, 2023 post. As of June 20, 2026, no updates, announcements, patches, or developer posts have appeared in over two and a half years. The game was explicitly described as a university project, and the team dispersed after the project concluded. The pattern is consistent with a completed student project that shipped a polishing update shortly after launch and then wrapped up. There is no evidence of ongoing development, no unreleased DLC, and no live service structure.
Evidence
The team described the game as a year-long university Advanced Game Project, expressed gratitude to players, and released a post-launch update with new quests, animations, and platform support. This was framed as an extra contribution after the semester ended.
