Evaluation

Bitburner is a free-to-play open-source programming RPG that has been in continuous, active development since its Steam launch on December 10, 2021. The developer, Fulcrum Games (in practice a large open-source community), has shipped seven major content updates on Steam over that period: v1.6.0 (March 29, 2022), v2.2.0 (January 2, 2023), v2.3.0 (May 25, 2023), v2.5.1 (December 1, 2023), v2.6.0 (March 5, 2024), v2.7.0 (December 8, 2024), v2.8.0 (March 5, 2025), and v3.0.0 (May 1, 2026). This establishes a strong, sustained cadence of major releases roughly every 3–12 months. The most recent major update, version 3.0.0 released on May 1, 2026, introduced a significant new game mechanic called the Darknet, along with sweeping API changes and balance overhauls. A follow-up patch, v3.0.1, shipped on May 17, 2026 — just five weeks before today's date of June 22, 2026. A January 2023 development status post confirmed that while the original lead developer stepped back, development was explicitly described as "active again." The game's store description on Steam also lists "Continuing development!" as a bullet point feature. No specific future content has been announced by name, but the game is clearly in active development with a very recent major release and a long track record of sustained updates.
