Evaluation

Combat Mission: Red Thunder launched on June 15, 2023, with two DLC packs — Fire and Rubble and Battle Pack 1 — both released on the same day and still the only DLC listed on the store. Both are shipped and complete. The store description explicitly states the game is "supported for the long haul with patches, upgrades and expansions," which is the developer's own public commitment to future content. The most significant development came on August 27, 2024, when Matrix Games announced the acquisition of Battlefront. The entire Battlefront team, including original creators, joined Slitherine. The announcement stated plans to "enhance the series with cutting-edge technology and innovative gameplay." Importantly, within the same post, a new tournament was announced using maps "starting from the master map of the Battle Pack 2" — this is a reference to a Battle Pack 2 that has not been formally listed as a DLC on the store, suggesting content beyond what has shipped is being worked on or at minimum exists in some form. As of October 1, 2026, there have been no further developer communications beyond the August 27, 2024 acquisition post, which is now over 13 months ago. However, the acquisition announcement itself contained forward-looking statements about franchise growth and made direct reference to Battle Pack 2 material, so the commitment to future content was not vague — it was tied to a concrete artifact. The absence of a formal DLC listing for Battle Pack 2 means it has not shipped, but the developer's own reference to it in an official post remains the most recent signal on content status. The combination of the explicit long-term support statement in the store description and the acquisition post's reference to Battle Pack 2 material sustains a content-planned assessment. The 13 months of silence since the acquisition post is notable, but it does not override a direct developer reference to unshipped content — it would need to significantly exceed the threshold before switching to a development-uncertain posture, especially given the major organizational transition the franchise just went through.
Evidence
Matrix Games announced the acquisition of Battlefront; the post states plans to enhance the series with new technology and gameplay, and references 'Battle Pack 2' master maps being used for a tournament — indicating content beyond the currently released Battle Pack 1 exists or is in development.

About this game

Combat Mission Red Thunder focuses on the hard fought Eastern Front battles of Bagration and Poland, from the swamps of Belarus to the gates of Warsaw during the summer of 1944. Experience the most balanced period of tactical warfare on the Eastern Front, even as the Axis' strategic ability to wage war began to collapse. Play out historical battles and campaigns or create your own customized Quick Battles. All new units, new terrain, and new features make this a must-have for all Combat Mission fans.

Red Thunder brings you to the Eastern Front where the forces of the Third Reich definitively, and decisively, lost all hope of victory. Command the full array of Soviet forces or those of the German Heer as the battles rage across thousands of square miles of territory. Find out first hand why the Soviet juggernaut could not be stopped.

Two highly detailed and thoroughly researched campaigns set the stage for what many consider the most interesting ground combat of the entire war. Certainly it's perfect for those who love tanks, because there's no shortage of them in these battles! The first campaign has you as the Soviet commander of the initial breakthrough and exploitation of a key sector of the German front at Orshra at the beginning of Bagration. The second details a very successful German armored counter attack at Radzymin, Poland, which was largely responsible for stalling the Soviet's push into Warsaw. There's also 18 stand alone battles and a ton of Quick Battle maps. In addition, we included massive "Master Maps" used to create the campaigns which can be used to make your own battles for the wide range of formations with 84 vehicle types and dozens of heavy weapons.
