Evaluation

DemonStar is a remaster of the 1997 shareware classic, released on Steam on December 11, 2023. In the weeks following launch, the developer shipped a series of patches addressing bugs and adding small features (v1.03 through v1.06a), then followed up with a more substantial v1.1 feature patch on January 14, 2024 that added graphics options, gameplay tweaks, and localization improvements. On February 12, 2025, developer Scott Host posted a direct update about an upcoming v2.0 release, describing it as a major overhaul touching nearly every part of the game — levels, enemy designs, backdrop graphics, and more. He noted that personal circumstances (caring for his mother's health over the prior year) had slowed development considerably, and said the full v2.0 release was coming "very soon." As of June 20, 2026 — more than 16 months after that announcement — v2.0 has not shipped and the developer has not posted any further updates. The promised update remains undelivered and there has been no communication explaining the continued delay. Given the substantial gap between the February 2025 announcement and today with no follow-through, it's unclear whether v2.0 is still actively being worked on.
Evidence
Developer announces v2.0 update is nearly ready, describing comprehensive improvements to levels, enemies, graphics, and loading screens. Cites personal family health issues as a cause of prior delays. Last official communication from the developer.
