Evaluation

Desert Skies entered Steam Early Access on May 30, 2019 and has never reached a 1.0 release. The developer, White_Rabbit_Games, shipped a series of meaningful updates between 2019 and 2021, including new biomes, caves, crafting overhauls, farming, and a major switch from procedural generation to a fixed open world (Update 1.16, shipped May 12, 2021). That update explicitly described the open world as "just the beginning" and outlined plans for new world-building tools, hand-crafted areas, unique biomes with hills and canyons, and cooperative multiplayer that was described as nearly ready for testing. The last developer post of any kind was a bug fix update on May 20, 2021. Since that date — more than five years ago — there has been no news post, patch, roadmap update, or any other official communication from the developer. The game remains in Early Access with no 1.0 release, and the substantial content the developer publicly committed to (multiplayer, new enemies, expanded biomes, permanent world saving, and more) has not been publicly delivered or officially cancelled. The combination of unfinished Early Access status, a large slate of promised but undelivered features, and over five years of complete silence from the developer makes the current state of development genuinely uncertain.

The Desert Skies Story

It's the American Wild West gone horribly wrong.

It began with rumours of terrifying creatures attacking people at the far frontier. Then the first town was wiped out. Now years have passed and everyone has fled east, leaving behind a ghost land.

You were part of an expedition organised by famed scientist Nikola Tesla to investigate the creatures and their origin. A fully stocked hot air balloon kept you all safely off the desert floor, until a sandstorm destroyed most of the airship and took the rest of your team with it.

Now you're the sole survivor, out of supplies and clinging to what's left of your airship as it drifts down towards the sand. You've spotted some wagons in the desert ahead and have just enough fuel to make it there. You might find supplies, and if you can scavenge enough to get back into the air then you might be able to limp from location to location and rebuild enough to fly far west, solve the mystery and stop the monsters...

But that means landing. The creatures are attracted to noise, and on the desert floor they can hear you scream.
