Evaluation

Dystopia is a free-to-play cyberpunk multiplayer game that has been continuously maintained by Puny Human since its original 2009 launch. The game has received a long string of major updates: version 1.5.0 and 1.5.2 in February 2018, 1.5.3 in November 2020, 1.5.4 in January 2023, and — most recently — three successive updates in August 2026 alone: 1.5.5 on August 3, 1.5.6 on August 15, and 1.5.7 on August 23. The August 2026 updates are substantial. Version 1.5.5 brought reworked weapon mechanics, high-tickrate server support (up to 256 tick), a rebuilt main menu, a new stats backend, major Linux fixes, and numerous bug fixes. Version 1.5.6 added full localization into 30+ languages, damage numbers, a revamped pickup feed, a new interface tab, and a credits screen — calling it a month before Dystopia's 21st anniversary. Version 1.5.7 followed just eight days later with translation fixes and per-team crosshairs. The previous assessment noted a July 2026 developer post promising "updates coming over the next few months" targeting macOS support, improved Linux and Steam Deck support, and engine optimizations. The flurry of August 2026 updates is consistent with that commitment being actively fulfilled. No developer statement has indicated that development is wrapping up; the developer's own communications suggest continued engagement with the community and the codebase.

About this game

Dystopia is a cyberpunk game on the Source engine that places the player into tense combat situations in a high-tech world spanned by computer networks. Playing as either Punk mercenaries, or Corporate security forces, the player will fight through the physical world to gain access, via jack-in terminals, to cyberspace.

Cyberspace is a three-dimensional representation of the world's network. Inside cyberspace, players will launch programs to hack into systems linked to the physical world while fighting off enemy hackers and defending critical systems. Gameplay progresses through inter-linked physical and cyberspace objectives, some are completed in either the physical world or cyberspace, others only by a well-timed combination of the two.

The player will be immersed in action-packed battles, whether the player is a heavily augmented combat mercenary armed to the teeth with the latest in firepower, or a twitch reflex cyberdecker racing to infiltrate a cyberspace node; they'll be immersed in an action-packed battle. Only through skillful use of the high-tech arsenal we're making available and intelligent team play will players truly jack-in and kick ass.

Puny Human is a collection of dedicated and talented gamers who are creating this action-packed multiplayer game. Dystopia draws on the themes and concepts of the cyberpunk genre and implements ideas born out of years of gaming experience. With a competitive focused gameplay system, we hope to produce the next step in online multiplayer gaming.
