Evaluation

FPS Chess is a free-to-play student project that launched on July 16, 2022 and has continued receiving updates from its developers. The game has received two major content updates: shiny pieces (Version 1.1.0, February 4, 2023) and wooden pieces plus a reimagined map via the paid FPS Chess: Ignition DLC (Version 1.2.0, June 24, 2026). In the July 1, 2026 and July 8, 2026 patch notes, the developer explicitly committed to posting one patch per Wednesday, devoting one day a week to FPS Chess bug fixes, balancing, and content additions while focusing the rest of their time on a sequel (FPS Chess 2). This commitment has been consistently followed: eight weekly patches shipped between July 1 and August 26, 2026, each introducing new features, balance changes, and fixes — including a new practice range gamemode in the August 26, 2026 patch, which also mentions the simple AI within it "will be improved over future patches." The developer actively solicits community input on what to add next and is visibly maintaining a weekly update rhythm. No end to this support has been announced.

About this game

Play an ordinary game of chess against a friend or a stranger.

However, all your intricate strategies will crumble before the enemy rook's sniper trick-shot.
All your practiced openings and counters will amount to nothing before the enemy queen's randomly sprayed machine gun.
You finally checkmate the king. Unfortunately, it seems you are not ready for this fight. 5 seconds in and you've been sliced in half by the king's sword.

It turns out you are not playing Chess at all, but an FPS. Just make sure to practice your aim!
