Free Chess launched on May 9, 2024 and has received a steady stream of updates and new chess set DLC since then. Major content milestones include the Free Chess 2.0 update on June 30, 2024 (adding single-player AI, movement guides, maps, and a game clock), multiple paid DLC sets throughout 2024, a substantial update on February 4, 2026 (overhauling the AI engine, adding new multiplayer menus, new free chess sets, and upgrading to Unreal Engine 5.7), and most recently the Standard IV and Dark Elven Set DLC on April 9, 2026. The February 4, 2026 developer post explicitly stated: "With our DLC, we have a few artists jumping onboard to create some work for the game, so expect to see a few more sets appear in time." This is a clear signal that the content pipeline remains open, with new artists actively contributing pieces. The April 9, 2026 post confirmed this by releasing a DLC set created by a new contributing artist — the first instance of the developer incorporating outside artists' work. GrimmGitz has maintained a consistent pattern of shipping new content roughly every one to three months since launch. The most recent communication was on April 9, 2026. As of today, October 8, 2026, approximately six months have passed since that last post — which approaches the upper end of the observed release cadence. However, the developer explicitly stated in February 2026 that more sets are coming from new artists, and no statement of completion or end of development has been made. The developer's own words point to an ongoing content pipeline, and the silence has not yet extended meaningfully beyond the historical pattern to suggest development has stalled.
