Evaluation

Great Paintings VR launched on January 14, 2021 as a virtual reality art museum featuring over 1,000 paintings. In its first year, the developer was quite active, shipping frequent updates that expanded the painting collection (from 500 to 712 to 1,000 paintings), added new artist galleries, introduced custom photo gallery support, expanded the music selection, and added language options. A notable milestone came in October 2022, when the developer added a Hidden Object game mode to the DLC — the only major feature addition of that scale in the game's history. The most recent update, posted on October 29, 2024, added AI-generated English audio descriptions for all paintings. Since that update, the developer has not published any further communications. There are no unreleased DLC items, no announced future content, and no developer roadmap pointing to upcoming additions. The sole DLC item on the store is a "Donation" option released in June 2021. Given the nature of the product — a curated VR gallery rather than a live-service or episodic game — and the absence of any signals pointing to planned future content, the game appears to have reached a complete state as of the October 2024 audio update.
Evidence
Hidden Object game mode added to the DLC — the only major feature addition of this scale, introducing a 'Where's Waldo?'-style search game across the galleries.

Museums can increase our sense of wellbeing. It can help us feel proud of where we have come from, can inspire, challenge and stimulate us. With our society facing issues such as poverty, inequality, intolerance, and discrimination, museums, including VR museums, can help us understand, debate, and challenge these concerns.

  • "Painting is just another way of keeping a diary" Pablo Picasso
  • "I believe that the great painters with their intellect as master have attempted to force this unwilling medium of paint and canvas into a record of their emotions." Edward Hopper
  • "If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint." Edward Hopper
  • "A painting requires a little mystery, some vagueness, and some fantasy. When you always make your meaning perfectly plain you end up boring people." Edgar Degas
