Evaluation
High Entropy: Challenges is a free, self-contained FPS released on September 1, 2020 by solo developer Álvaro García. Despite being a finished standalone experience, the developer has continued to actively update and improve the game well past its original release.
The most recent major activity includes Update 1.3 (April 17, 2025), a sweeping overhaul that redesigned all 15 levels (redoing levels 1 and 15 from scratch), improved enemy AI, redesigned UIs, rewrote tutorials, and added new achievements. This was followed by Update 1.4 (June 16, 2025), which added full gamepad and Steam Deck support. Several bug-fix patches followed, with the most recent on October 9, 2025 (Patch 1.4.2).
A developer log from March 10, 2025 confirmed the developer had returned to active work after a personal hiatus, and explicitly mentioned ongoing ambitions for a full commercial version called "High Entropy" — a vision also echoed in the store description — which would include this challenges mode plus an exclusive story mode. The developer noted that work on Update 1.3 was also contributing to development of that eventual full game.
The developer has shipped two major feature updates in 2025 alone, establishing a cadence of roughly one major update every several months. The last developer communication was October 9, 2025, approximately one year ago as of today's date (October 8, 2026). This silence is approaching the outer edge of the historical update interval (roughly 5–8 months between major updates), but the developer has not announced the conclusion of development and the store description still references the planned full commercial game. No statement has been made that development of this free game is complete.

About this game
Use computers (via GUIs or the command line), unlock doors, crawl through vents, fight enemies head on or find other ways to neutralize or avoid them...
High Entropy: Challenges is a free, action-adventure FPS (inspired by some of my favorite immersive sims) consisting of a beginning, 15 levels, a default ending and a special ending if you finish with a 100% score in all levels.

The computers in the game include a command line interface for those interested in overcoming some obstacles the 'hacker' way, but the levels are designed so there's always an alternative way to advance (except once as an introduction in level 7, and the exact commands needed then are written in a document next to the corresponding computer). Some secondary objectives and achievements require its use, but there are manuals placed around the levels that gradually introduce how do it.
Also, some of the levels offer multiple paths to solve them, being able to choose a more action oriented approach or a stealthy one, and include some achievements related to this (Path of Fists, Path of Shadows...).
Hopefully, High Entropy: Challenges is a fun stand-alone gaming experience by itself, but it was also made to serve as a way for people to help me test my ideas out and see if creating High Entropy --the extended, commercial version I have in mind-- is viable and something people would enjoy (it would include this challenges mode and an exclusive story mode).
