Evaluation

Isles of Yore is a prehistoric animal survival multiplayer game currently in Steam Early Access. The developer has maintained a consistent pattern of substantial updates since the game launched in February 2022, shipping eight major content updates through at least September 2025. These include the Unreal Engine 5 migration and new biome (July 2022), a full new map with new playable animals and herbivore gameplay (April 2023), Dilophosaurus and AI packing (June 2023), Sarcosuchus and temperature gameplay (July 2023), and a completely new map with a desert biome alongside a full AI overhaul (May 2025). More recent patches in June, July, and September 2025 continued adding features including a talent tree, a questing system, and the opening of a new swamp biome area. The developer has communicated explicit plans for future content in multiple places. The store description states that "future updates will extend this roster further, with larger animals and aquatic biomes planned." The September 11, 2025 patch notes describe the new swamp area as a work in progress with more AI and polish still to come. The May 2025 major update also stated intentions to expand the map with additional caves and deeper cavern systems in future patches. The last developer communication on record is the September 11, 2025 patch. As of October 8, 2026, that is approximately 13 months without a new post — which does extend beyond the roughly 3–12 month interval between major updates seen historically. However, the prior major content gap between Patch 0.9.0 (July 2023) and Patch 0.10.0 (May 2025) was nearly 22 months, so prolonged quiet periods are not unprecedented for this developer. Given that gap and the explicit, multi-front commitments to unfinished content (work-in-progress swamp biome, promised roster expansions, aquatic biomes, cave systems), the development situation does not yet warrant a development_uncertain signal — the developer has a demonstrated history of extended gaps followed by significant updates, and the most recent patch actively described ongoing work. The game remains in Early Access with clearly communicated unfinished content.
Evidence
Patch 0.12.0 opens a new swamp biome described as a work in progress, with new AI and further polish explicitly noted as still to come. This is the most recent developer communication on record.

About this game

Isles of Yore is a multiplayer simulator that aims to make you experience what it was like to go through life as a prehistoric animal.

Survival

Claim your domain with an animal of your choosing in an environment that best suits your needs—dense jungle, treacherous swamps, and the wide open areas of the island all offer unique advantages and challenges.

Compete with other players and AI in a bid for supremacy and survival in the food chain.

Various carnivores and a herbivore character are available for play, with AI driven characters likewise inhabiting and stalking the land around you.

Future updates will extend this roster further, with larger animals and aquatic biomes planned.

An immersive PvPvE simulation experience

The game's core centers around making you feel like your animal, putting you in full control and giving you a sense of what it was like for the animal when it roamed the Earth, growing and tending to its needs. Balancing thirst, hunger, and stamina are vital day-to-day concerns as you explore the rich environment around you alone or in a pack of friends.

While the main focus is on the immersive simulation, PvP elements with combat between players is available.

If there are no other players around you'll encounter AI animals on your journey, helpful considering our small community and true to the game's core focus of providing a simulation experience in a world that progresses without you.

If you're looking for a more laid back experience, Isles of Yore might be right up your alley.

Customisation and progression

The game includes a character customisation system, giving you creative control over aspects such as patterns, colouring, and skin types.

Spots or Stripes? Proto-feathers or scales? It's up to you.

A talent tree system also exists to further tailor your chosen animal to your liking, with options to specialise for the playstyle you prefer.

A dynamic world

Explore a large, diverse island with its own day/night cycle and highly variable weather.

Fog, snow, and storms may reduce your vision as you navigate through the world, heat waves and cold spells may force you to take refuge in shelters.

AI

The game features a variety of AI animals that can be found inhabiting the island.

Each species has its own own schedule and is trying to survive on the map just like you.

You'll run into migrating herbivores and hungry carnivores hunting for their meals—make sure you don't end up on the menu!

Younger animals can be found amongst the roaming packs and may present an opportune snack if you're quick enough to escape the adult's protective claws and fangs.

A big goal of the project is to further extend the AI systems and make the animals feel true to life with behaviour that uniquely suits them.

Custom servers

Documentation on server hosting is available, with a plethora of options available for server owners—gameplay parameters such as the speed at which your needs deplete, stats overrides, and many more are all available to tailor the experience to your community's liking.

⚠️ Please note that the server configuration system is currently going through a revamp, and some options have been deprecated for the time being (mainly weather changes, time of day progression, and control over the AI count). This is part of an ongoing effort to update these systems and make the core experience better.

Social

Going at it alone is not required, as grouping and chatting (toggleable) with your friends is fully supported.

A labour of love from a small team

Isles of Yore is a passion project started from a place of admiration for the awe-inspiring history of life on our planet. The path forged by games in the survival genre offers a uniquely visceral, tantalising glimpse into this strange and wondrous past, and Yore intends to build on this formula with special care to highlight the uniqueness of the animals that came before us.

The game is being developed by a small team and is still going through its update cycle to expand and improve the experience.

Your feedback is most welcome in the Discord to help drive development.
