Evaluation

Jupiter Hell launched as a full 1.0 release on August 5, 2021, with ChaosForge explicitly stating at the time that it was "just the beginning" and that updates were planned. That commitment has been honored consistently: the game has received 15 major content updates across nearly five years, at a cadence of roughly every 3–8 months. Notable milestones include overhauls to all three moons' branch content (2022), a full modding and Steam Workshop system (August 2023), the substantial Abattoir branch expansion (March 2024), and most recently version 1.9 on June 3, 2026, which added the Heavy Gunner — the first entirely new playable class since the game launched. A follow-up hotfix (1.9b) shipped on June 10, 2026. As of today (August 19, 2026), the last developer communication was just over two months ago, well within the established 3–8 month update cadence. No announcement of development ending has been made, and the developer remains clearly active. The 49-post news archive confirms the depth and regularity of this update history.

Does 20+ years of experience making top-down, cosmic-hell roguelikes sound like a recipe for a hell of a good turn-based roguelike?
ChaosForge team, the developer of Jupiter Hell, gained recognition for creating a That game, the Roguelike" (known now as DRL), a turnbased unmake of a famous 1993 FPS. They built the Jupiter Hell as a spiritual successor to DRL.
