Evaluation

Loot Box Simulator launched on July 27, 2018 as a satirical simulation game. Following launch, the developer shipped a series of patches over the roughly six weeks from August 4 to September 3, 2018, adding new loot items, expanding sound options, and fixing various bugs. The last recorded developer communication was the 0.3.1 bug fix update on September 3, 2018. Since then — now nearly eight years ago — there have been no further posts, announcements, or updates of any kind. There is no unreleased DLC on the store, no roadmap, and no developer statements about future content. The store description makes no mention of ongoing updates or planned expansions. The game appears to have launched as a self-contained satirical product and received a short post-launch polish pass before development concluded.

What are loot boxes?

Loot boxes are a popular form of monetization in video games. Similar to trading card packs, you have a chance of getting what you want when you open one. If a player runs out of boxes and still hasn’t gotten what they wanted, additional loot boxes are usually available for purchase. Almost every major game last year included them, blurring the line between games and gambling. Certain forms of loot boxes are now illegal in Belgium and the Netherlands.
