Evaluation

Macabre entered Steam Early Access on September 26, 2025, developed by Australian indie studio Weforge Studio. The game is explicitly presented as unfinished, with the developers using Early Access to build and refine the game alongside their community. Since launch, the studio has maintained an active development pace. Four feature patches shipped between September 30 and October 29, 2025, covering AI improvements, gameplay balance, new traversal mechanics, and audio work. On December 8, 2025, the studio released "The Nest Update," described as their largest content drop yet, introducing a new map location and primary objective (the Crawler's Nest), a full character customisation and cosmetics system, comprehensive AI and audio overhauls, and new gameplay mechanics. Developer communications throughout the Early Access period have consistently previewed upcoming work. The October 29, 2025 patch post outlined ongoing development of new equipment items and audio zone improvements. The September 26, 2025 launch post explicitly listed planned additions including new maps and biomes, additional monsters, crafting systems, roaming wildlife, and more. The pre-launch announcement on September 17, 2025 similarly described Early Access as the way the game would be "finished with" the community. The most recent developer communication on record is the December 8, 2025 Nest Update release post, which closes with enthusiasm about player feedback and future challenges — no indication of a wind-down or completion. As of October 1, 2026, that is approximately 9.5 months since the last communication. This is a longer silence than the studio's prior pattern of roughly monthly updates, and warrants monitoring; however, the game remains in Early Access with no developer statement suggesting development has concluded or the studio has gone quiet for a concerning reason. The studio's historical pattern during Early Access has been to ship one major content update roughly every 2–3 months, with feature patches in between. At 9.5 months since the last update, the silence is notable, but no explicit distress signal or completion statement has been made.

About this game

Macabre is a high-stakes co-op horror game where stealth is survival and the Rift is never the same twice.

Maps shift, objectives change, and the monster adapts. Scavenge rare resources and fight the urge to panic as you stabilise each Rift before it collapses.

Survival isn’t guaranteed. Escape together or abandon your team to save yourself. Trust is fragile. Betrayal is easy.

One truth remains… It’s Macabre.

You will not be able to shoot your way out of this nightmare. Macabre is about stealth, cunning and wit. Stick together to survive, or betray your teammates to keep the loot for yourself.

Just remember, Macabre preys on those who stray from the pack.

Luckily, you meet a fellow Rift enthusiast named Banjo, an eccentric survivor who guides you with his knowledge and gear. He is your lifeline, offering equipment and upgrades that give you a fighting chance. Spend your resources wisely.

Macabre learns as you play. Rely on the same tricks and it will adapt. Each encounter forces you to improvise. Distractions, stuns and even sacrifices may be the only way out.

Every run is a gamble. To keep what you have scavenged, you must reach the Extract alive. If you die, you lose everything. The Rift does not forgive mistakes, and neither will your team. Greed, hesitation or betrayal can be just as deadly as the monster itself.

While avoiding Macabre, you will scavenge powerful artefacts and strange items from fractured timelines. Every piece of loot matters. The right equipment can reveal hidden truths, distract the monster or help you survive long enough to escape.

No two runs are ever the same. Each Rift reconfigures itself with randomised layouts, shifting objectives and unpredictable monster behaviour. You will never feel safe, no matter how many times you enter.
