Evaluation

Maximum Action has been in Early Access since September 19, 2018 and remains clearly under active development by solo developer George Mandell (with collaborator OptionalSpace). The update history shows a consistent pattern of substantial content drops: a major player controller overhaul shipped on February 7, 2025 (version 0.95), and the even larger version 0.96 shipped on June 26, 2026 with two new campaign levels (Arctic 2 and Jungle 2), a reworked Jungle level, a third-person mode, an overhauled cinematic replay system, upgraded player faces, and improved hand textures. In the 0.96 post, the developer explicitly stated the game "has never been closer to 1.0" and announced a shift to more frequent updates going directly to the main branch. A follow-up patch on July 30, 2026 added Steam Deck support and additional fixes, and the most recent post on September 3, 2026 confirmed ongoing work on level overhauls — specifically a full layout rework of the Town level from High Noon to Yuma, with planned improvements to Rooftop, Restaurant, Nightclub, and Good Luck Parking levels as well. The developer introduced a "Deleted Scenes" feature to preserve original level versions alongside the reworked ones. There is no indication development is winding down — quite the opposite, with the developer actively communicating, shipping patches, and teasing upcoming level updates as recently as September 3, 2026.
Evidence
Latest patch added Anti-Aliasing options, Simplified Chinese localization, and replay stability fixes. Developer OptionalSpace also teased upcoming full layout overhauls for the Town, Rooftop, Restaurant, Nightclub, and Good Luck Parking levels, with work already underway.

About this game

MAXIMUM Action is the stress ball of first-person shooters. If you are looking for a quick dose of highly replayable sandbox slow-motion heroic bloodshed with homages to classic ’80s and '90s action flicks then MAXIMUM Action might just be the FPS you’ve been dreaming of.

No complicated skill trees, leveling up, or drawn-out cutscenes, just pure fun that gets straight to the point.

Where MAXIMUM Action shines is in its emphasis on creativity and replayability. The entire game has been designed as a sandbox for the player to experiment in. From simply approaching levels with different combinations of dives, slides, and kicks, to a fully-fledged level editor allowing players to create action in any way they see fit. Further, use the sandbox menu to replay levels with different combinations of weapons or add more enemies to up the challenge.

And with full workshop and mod support, experiment with hundreds of custom levels and weapons to spice up the action!

Getting the best experience out of MAXIMUM Action requires a bit of creativity and imagination from the player, and I understand not everyone is up to the challenge! But if you’ve always wanted to play a role in your own balls to the wall action movie then I’d say give MAXIMUM Action a try!
