Evaluation

Meridian 59 is a free-to-play MMO originally released in 1996 that has been running continuously and was brought to Steam in August 2018. The game is fully released, completely free with no in-game purchases, and sustained entirely by community donations. Since 2022, the development team — a group of open-source contributors — has maintained a consistent pattern of substantial updates. Major patches include: the December 2022 update (window resizing, new rentable rooms, gameplay improvements), patch 1.6.0 on January 3, 2026 (a full audio engine replacement from Miles Sound System to OpenAL Soft, along with wide-ranging fixes), and patch 1.7.0 on June 11, 2026 (fully positional 3D audio, dynamic lighting with torches and glowing weapons, translucent wall support, and dozens of fixes). In between these, the team shipped multiple feature-rich patches in 2023, 2024, and 2025 covering gameplay balance, client improvements, visual rendering, Portuguese language support, and more. An October 2023 developer post noted that for the first time since the 1990s, the project had four or more active programmers contributing simultaneously, and explicitly stated that "the work has already begun for the next patch." The new official website launched in May 2024 also noted that more content and game guides were coming. Patch 1.7.0 itself mentions "experimental groundwork for client theming" as an early work in progress to watch in future patches, signaling ongoing development momentum. No announcement of a content conclusion or end of development has been made. The game is currently receiving its most active development in decades.

About this game

Play the world's first 3D massively-multiplayer online game!

Meridian was released in 1996, when few people had heard of the Internet. It became well-known for its exciting player-vs-player (PvP) combat system, often setting alliances of guilds against each other. It has been running almost continuously ever since. In 2010 it returned to its original creators, and now it's open source and completely free. Come and see the game that started it all!

After creating your account in our game client and logging in, you will customize your character and select your initial skills and spells. You start in the town of Raza. Right-click on signs to learn the controls and basic combat. After passing through a glowing portal, you will be transported to the main world, where you are free to explore. Don't be afraid to ask other players for help!

Meridian is completely free--there are no purchases, in-game or otherwise, and no advertising. If you would like to donate to keep the servers running, you may do so on our Web site.
