Evaluation

Open Brush is a free, open-source VR painting app — the community-maintained successor to Google's Tilt Brush — and has been under continuous active development since its release on June 8, 2021. The developer has now shipped five major content releases post-launch: v2.0 (January 26, 2023), v2.4 "Prismatic" (January 26, 2024), Multiplayer support (April 30, 2025), v2.13 "Lucky Number" (December 9, 2025), and v2.31 (August 29, 2026). This establishes a sustained cadence of significant feature releases roughly every 6-14 months, with feature patches and bug fixes filling the gaps. The most recent major release — v2.31 — arrived just two days before today's date and delivered portals between sketches, drawing-based camera path creation, Gaussian Splat capture tools, expanded multiplayer (up to 12 people with passthrough rooms), an improved view-only mode, 360° and depth capture enhancements, and Windows Explorer sketch thumbnails. Between major releases, the team has continued shipping feature patches (a Windows thumbnail extension in January 2026) and bug fixes (most recently in March 2026). No end-of-development statement has been made at any point. The project's open-source, community-driven nature and consistent history of shipping major updates signal that development is firmly ongoing, with the latest major release having just landed.

About this game

Open Brush allows you to paint in 3D space with XR. Unleash your creativity with three-dimensional brush strokes. Your canvas is open around you. Your palette is your imagination. Your inspiration is everywhere.

Your freedom comes the moment you move your head to one side, and see your strokes from a different perspective.

From here, Open Brush will treat you to a palette of 48 different brush types, freed from the bounds of typical painting media. Fire, water, smoke and light beams are just a selection of the wonderful brushes you’ll find. A large selection of environments will find you floating in space, creating costumes, or enjoying a snowy walk.

Anything is possible in Open Brush. Transport yourself across the cosmos, or jump through the frames of famous portraits and see what lies beyond. The choice is yours.

Open Brush is the community powered evolution of Tilt Brush from Google, originally developed by Skillman & Hackett.
