Evaluation

Open World Game: the Open World Game launched on November 19, 2019 as a free-to-play satirical indie game. The developer shipped a steady stream of feature patches in the weeks following launch (controller support, Steam achievements, quality-of-life improvements), then released its one and only paid DLC — The Gratuitous DLC — on May 14, 2020, adding a New Game Plus mode with additional content. In the posts surrounding that DLC's release, the developer was transparent about the game's future: the DLC was created partly to fund the studio's next project (a 2D action-RPG called "Heartless"), and the developer framed it as a finale for this game's content — the "overdeveloped" companion piece to what was always intended as a short, finished joke. A post on May 22, 2020 signed off by noting they were "looking forward to sharing more of our next project," clearly pointing attention away from Open World Game and toward that successor title. Both DLC items listed on the store are released. The only post-2020 activity is a single bug-fix patch dated August 6, 2024 — routine maintenance rather than new content. There are no unreleased DLC entries, no roadmap, no announcements of future updates, and no developer statements suggesting additional content is planned. The game launched as a compact, intentionally minimal experience, received one expansion, and the developer has since moved on to a new project.
Evidence
The Gratuitous DLC launched, adding New Game Plus content. The post simultaneously announced the developer's next project (Heartless), signaling a shift in focus away from Open World Game.

About this game

Open World Game: the Open World Game is the purest open world game experience. We broke open world games down to their core so you don't have to deal with any more gorgeous 3D environments distracting you, stellar voice acting performances drawing you in, or even a prolonged epic Main Quest constantly weighing you down for ignoring it in lieu of collecting every card in that mini game. Just pure unadulterated open world game... game.

  • Over 400 Pick-Up Icons scattered across an open world
  • An epic story only told through Journal Entries
  • In-game Achievements
  • Fishing.
  • A 3-Branch Skill Tree perfectly crafted to make all your decision making easy
Oh yeah, this is satire.
