Evaluation

Outside the Lines is a free-to-play top-down shooter that launched on July 14, 2018. Following its release, the developer shipped a series of updates through mid-2019: balance and feature patches in the days after launch (Updates 1.0.1 and 1.0.2), an engine migration in September 2018 (Update 1.0.3), minor fixes in March 2019 (Update 1.0.4), and a code cleanup and balance pass in July 2019 (Update 1.1). The March 2019 post noted that "priorities are currently elsewhere," and the July 2019 Update 1.1 post was the last communication from the developer. No further updates, announcements, or developer communications have appeared since July 30, 2019. The store description explicitly states the game has no microtransactions and the developer is "literally not making any money from this," consistent with a small passion project with no live-service infrastructure. No DLC was ever announced or listed. The developer's early mentions of planned "random events" were the only hint of future content, but those were never formally announced and no update ever referenced them again — the game simply continued to receive balance and polish patches instead. With nearly seven years of silence since the last post and no outstanding commitments, the game is best understood as a completed, self-contained product.
Evidence
Update 1.1 overhauls the codebase and ships balance and quality-of-life changes. This is the last developer communication on record.

About this game

Outside the Lines is a free top-down shooter where drawing utensils compete to cover a coloring book with their color.

Features:

  • A colorful cast of three characters with different abilities. Only one of them doesn't have alliteration in its name!
  • Fast-paced gameplay with short rounds. Watching paint dry has never been more exciting!
  • Eleven different weapons with randomized stats, such as a cotton swab, a dish sponge, and a paintball shotgun.
  • Local multiplayer for two players with a co-op and a competitive mode. Ruin friendships, and then build them back!
  • Sometimes an eraser dude shows up. He's scary.
  • This game was originally made in three days for a game jam. Obviously this version of the game took longer but I just wanted to share that.
  • It's free. Like, no microtransactions or anything. I'm literally not making any money from this.
