Evaluation

Overwatch is a free-to-play, always-online team-based action game explicitly designed around a continuous live service model. Blizzard ships new seasons on a consistent roughly 6–10 week cadence, each bringing new heroes, maps, game modes, cosmetics, and a Battle Pass. The store description calls the game "always-on and ever-evolving," which is an accurate description of how the game operates. The current season — Reign of Talon Season 4: Heroes of Busan — launched on August 11, 2026, introducing a new Tank hero (D.Mon), map reworks for Busan, Paraíso, and Eichenwalde, a revamped Battle Pass system with player-choice reward tracks, new competitive features (Emerald Rank, Team Drives), and multiple in-season events including the Shooting Star: My MEKA Mania event (August 11–31) and the World Cup Cheer Rally (September 1–14). The season launch announcement also references mid-cycle content still to come. This follows Season 3 (June 16, 2026), Season 2 (April 14, 2026), and Season 1 (February 10, 2026), which kicked off the year-long "Reign of Talon" narrative arc featuring five new heroes arriving simultaneously. Prior to that rebranding, the game shipped as "Overwatch 2" through at least Season 20 (December 9, 2025). The DLC list shows Battle Pass bundles and cosmetic packs released alongside each season launch, confirming the monetized content rotation structure. The game's seasonal structure — with recurring Battle Passes, rotating events, new heroes, new maps, and an ongoing narrative arc — is the defining characteristic of its live service design. There is no indication from Blizzard that this model is ending.
