Evaluation

Pirate Souls is a free-to-play Early Access MMORPG that has been receiving consistent, frequent updates since its July 2022 launch. The game is explicitly structured as an ongoing live service: it features a cash shop (with items such as the Soul Fruit Reset sold there), seasonal holiday events, a daily reward system, and rotating content additions — hallmarks of a game designed to run indefinitely rather than reach a defined completion point. Developer activity has been sustained and very recent. A holiday post on December 21, 2025 recapped 2025's additions and laid out 2026 plans: an improved achievement system with bestiary and armory, territory control with resource management, and a ship navigation system. The developer also noted that the "revolutionary army" faction and lightning soul fruit are still in development, planned to release alongside the ship navigation system. This represents substantial announced content that has not yet shipped. Updates have continued into 2026 at a healthy pace. Feature patches shipped in March, April, June, July, and August 2026, covering movement system overhauls, controller support, new graphics options, and PvP/PvE quest reworks. The most recent update was on August 9, 2026. Major content milestones include Mastery Island (December 29, 2024) and several significant feature expansions across 2025 and 2026. The game remains in Early Access with an active studio, a published forward-looking roadmap, announced but unshipped content systems, and a live-service structure that has no stated end point.

About this game

Retro-style Pirate MMORPG with large focus on community and PvP

Free-to-play forever!

  • Become a Sailor in a harsh sea of thieves and heroes!Start off as a sailor and choose to join the Navy or become a Pirate! Become scum of the sea, or become a hero in the eyes of the law. Things aren't black and white in the world of Pirate Souls.

  • Open World PvP & Hardcore Game DesignThis may be a turn off for some, but Pirate Souls is a very hardcore game. So take this as a word of warning... Absolute freedom when it comes to PvP also means a bad time for some with a low tolerance for being killed for no reason. But for others, it's just another reason to get stronger!

  • Deep Character Customization in the right placesChoose your faction, join a crew and obtain a soul fruit power. Combined with thousands of equip-able items, no two seafarers will ever look or be the same. Pirate Souls is a game where you are encouraged to express yourself. Looking good doesn't cost you to lose fights.
