Evaluation

Rivals of Aether II launched on October 23, 2024 and has been receiving free content updates at a consistent pace ever since. As of the assessment date of August 31, 2026, the game has shipped seven free post-launch characters, with the most recent — Gouie — arriving on August 4, 2026. At EVO 2026 on July 1, 2026, Aether Studios made two back-to-back character announcements. The first was Gouie (now released). The second was Mina the Hollower, a guest character from Yacht Club Games, confirmed to arrive in Rivals 2 in 2027. The studio also presented a 2027 roadmap at the EVO showcase panel, continuing their tradition of annual roadmap reveals. These represent concrete, named commitments to future content. Major update history shows consistent delivery: the Fun-For-All update (Patch 1.6.0, April 7, 2026) added Item Mode with 20 items, 10 new casual stages, a revamped queue system, and the 6th free character Slade. The Gouie update (Patch 1.7.0, August 4, 2026) added the 7th free character alongside gameplay modifiers, matchmaking improvements, and local co-op queuing. Feature patches and hotfixes have continued immediately after major updates, with the most recent developer communication on August 7, 2026. One studio note worth flagging: in the March 3, 2026 patch notes, Aether Studios disclosed a recent reduction in team size, and stated that monthly cosmetic bundles would shift from three skins to two going forward. However, core content delivery — new characters, major features, and the 2027 roadmap — has continued without interruption since that disclosure.
