Evaluation
Roots of Yggdrasil launched into Early Access on January 24, 2024, following a successful Kickstarter campaign. During Early Access, the developer shipped a steady cadence of major updates: Update 2: Skaldic Inspiration (March 20, 2024), Update 3: Playing with Fire (April 10, 2024), and Update 4: Home Sweet Holt (May 22, 2024). The game reached its full 1.0 release on September 6, 2024, branded as "Valkyrie's Lament," which introduced a new playable character (the Valkyrie Scion), new housing types, over 100 improvements, and concluded all in-game quests. Following launch, the developer issued two post-launch patches (Updates 1.1 and 1.2) addressing balance, quality-of-life improvements, and bug fixes through September 23, 2024. No additional major content updates, DLC announcements, or expansion roadmaps have been published since. The developer's most recent public communication, from February 19, 2026, announced a new game in the Rainbow Billy universe — signaling the studio has moved on to a new project. There are no unreleased DLC listings, no post-1.0 content roadmap, and no developer statements suggesting further content is planned for Roots of Yggdrasil. The 1.0 release described the conclusion of all quests, and subsequent updates were purely maintenance in nature. The game appears to have shipped as a complete product.

About this game
Ragnarok is here. Stuck in a perpetual time loop, Sunna and her tribe of Vikings must explore a fractured World Tree and attempt to reach the top of Yggdrasil.

Create settlements, build your deck and collect artifacts as you explore the nine realms of Norse Mythology in search of answers in this roguelike city-building game. Can you overcome and survive the new dangers of this broken world?

Players’ settlements will constantly be in a race against time to avoid the Ginnungagap. Each failure will bring them back to the beginning of their adventure, where they can start anew with more knowledge and a better mastery of the game mechanics.

The Holt is your permanent, customizable home and acts as the main hub of the game. Unlock new mechanics and permanent upgrades that will help you rebuild your tribe!

Befriend a diverse cast of Scions that will bring unique playstyles, bonus and modifiers to each loop.

Procedurally generated islands, encounters, and events will punctuate your experience, guaranteeing that no two expeditions are the same! Before each run, add and remove building cards to your deck to create different challenges and opportunities each time.
