Soul Chained

Released Sep 2026

Fight through Purgatory in a janky adventure where you and your friends are ethereally chained together. Wield chain magic, bully enemies with chain physics, and make terrible decisions in this game full of gratuitous amounts of jiggle physics. Built by a solo dev when mom wasn't home.

Evaluation

Soul Chained is a solo-developed action RPG that launched on Steam on September 7, 2026, following over two years of development. The game went through multiple public demo phases, participated in Steam Next Fest in June 2026, and gathered over 63,000 wishlists before launch. The developer has been highly active immediately following release. On September 9, 2026 (day two), a patch addressed a major crash bug tied to Japanese localization and removed several generative AI-assisted assets. On September 10, 2026 (day three, today), another patch (v1.1.6) fixed additional localization-related crashes and replaced more AI-generated sound effects. Both posts explicitly note that more updates are on the way, with the September 10 post specifically describing the next planned update as a broader bug-fixing and polish pass based on player feedback. Prior to launch, an April 2026 developer update noted the game was content and feature complete (with the exception of single-player mode, which was being rebuilt), and that remaining development time would focus on polish and optimization. The single-player mode was subsequently reworked and included at launch. A post from August 2025 described a lengthy list of planned features, but many of those (chain magic, new enemies, combat improvements) appear to have been delivered in the months leading up to the September 2026 release. Because the game launched only three days ago, there is no post-launch content cadence to analyze yet. The developer is clearly engaged and communicating actively, but it is too early to assess whether further content additions are planned beyond the current polish and stability work.
Evidence
Patch v1.1.6 released on day three, fixing more localization crashes and replacing additional AI-generated SFX. Developer states more updates are coming, with the next focused on general bug fixing and polish.

About this game

Soul Chained is a solo dev passion project where you and your friends play (and fail) as fallen rival warlords whose souls have been chained together for all eternity.

Condemned to wander Purgatory, you must atone for your mortal sins while bound to the very people you once called enemies. The Soul Chain is the center of it all - be it combat, exploration, demise, or victory.

What you get:

  • Yeet enemies (or friends) using chaotic chain-physics-based combat

  • Chain Magic, Various Weaponry and Stat Progression

  • Unique bosses and enemy encounters

  • Go crazy with up to 4 players in Online Havoc Mode for maximum jank and chaos

  • Bad Graphics & Equal Opportunity Jiggle Physics

  • A Jank slider that does absolutely nothing, I promise

The Soul Chain is neither your friend nor your enemy. Sometimes it creates the most cinematic coordinated attacks imaginable. Other times, it tugs you and your teammate straight into chaos as you die together in frustration.

Coil and tie up enemies together, trip bosses, slingshot objects, clothesline groups of mobs... and more. Combat is deliberate, stamina matters, and panic rolling is a lifestyle I actively designed against. Remember - learning how to fight with the Soul Chain IS the entire game.

As you ascend the colossal Tower of Purgatory, every chapter ends in a battle with massive manifestations of sin, trauma, regret, or an idea I probably came up with far too late at night.

Some will crush you. Others will throw you off ledges. All of them hit HARD.

Do you want to hate your friends? Bring up to three and ascend the Tower and Purgatory as a group. You might think - “The more, the better!”, but it usually ends in more accidental chain yanking, more desperate revives, increasingly louder comms, and failing together as one.

Are you a masochist? There's a single-player mode too.

Instead of being chained to a friend, it’s now a massive glowing ball you'll drag, swing, fight, and fail with throughout your ascension from Purgatory.
