Squids From Space entered Steam Early Access on June 16, 2017 and has never graduated to a full 1.0 release. Over the following two and a half years, Fun Bits was actively developing the game: they shipped multiple new game modes and maps, transitioned the game to free-to-play in October 2019, released two cosmetic DLC packs, and maintained a steady stream of feature patches and bug fixes. In November 2019, the developer posted that they had "so much more planned" for the game, and on January 7, 2020, they returned from a holiday break and announced that "some wonderful new features" were planned for a "next big milestone." On February 5, 2020, a Valentine's Day/Lunar New Year update shipped — and that is the last recorded communication or update from Fun Bits. No further posts, patches, or announcements have appeared since that date. The game remains listed in Early Access on Steam with no 1.0 release, no developer statement about the game's completion or closure, and no updates in over six years. The January 2020 promise of a major upcoming milestone was never fulfilled.
