Evaluation

Substance 3D Painter 2026 launched on Steam on March 11, 2025. Since then, Adobe has maintained an active update cadence, shipping feature patches and bug fix releases regularly. The most recent update, version 12.1.0, released on June 23, 2026, added substantial new functionality including Skew Baking tools, OpenPBR 1.1 support (making OpenPBR the new default workflow), Hard Surface Auto Unwrap improvements, and a range of USD workflow enhancements. Prior to that, bug fix releases went out in April and May 2026, and the 12.1.0 feature set was first previewed in a public beta announced on April 3, 2026. Critically, the store description explicitly states that purchasers of the standalone perpetual version will receive free feature updates until March 2027. This is a concrete, time-bound developer commitment to continued updates — the software is actively being developed and refined, and Adobe has told buyers they will keep receiving improvements through at least that date.
