Evaluation
Summerland is a short, free-to-play first-person narrative game developed solo by Conner Rush (then a high school student) and released on December 1, 2020. It was designed from the start as a self-contained, personal project — a roughly 1.5–2 hour story with no post-launch content planned.
On January 2, 2021, Conner posted directly about the game's future, explaining that he needed to step back from Summerland for his mental health, acknowledged he lacked the technical expertise to fully resolve reported performance issues, and stated his intent to move on to other creative projects. This was a clear signal that active development on Summerland was concluding.
That pivot proved genuine: by October 2024, Conner announced his next game, Project Songbird, and on April 3, 2026, Project Songbird launched. The Summerland news feed has since functioned solely as a channel to share updates about that new title.
The only DLC ever released was the soundtrack (December 2, 2020), which shipped the day after launch. No additional content was announced or released at any point after that. The game shipped as a complete, finished product and has remained so since its launch date.
Evidence
Developer Conner Rush posted directly about Summerland's future, stating he needed to step back from the project for mental health reasons, acknowledged he lacked the skills to fix remaining issues, and indicated he was moving on to other creative work. This is a clear statement that active development on Summerland was ending.
Project Songbird launched, confirming the developer's creative focus has fully shifted to the new title. No mention of any return to Summerland.

About this game
In every door lies another memory, and every memory unlocks another door.
There's a flash of white, and you suddenly find yourself in an unfamiliar place. A locked door keeps you enclosed in this small, empty room — well, empty all except for the table that sits in the dead center of the floor. Atop that table sits a rotary phone, completely unplugged. The walls and carpet are uncomfortably plain, the camera in the corner not helping with that discomfort. After a few moments, the unbearable silence is finally broken by the ringing of the rotary phone. There's nothing left for you to do but answer the call.
Summerland is a first-person narrative game developed by high school student Conner Rush. You take the role of an ill detective named Matthew as you relive the events of his recent past, all the while being questioned on your moral stances. With themes heavily revolving around ethical philosophy and the afterlife, Summerland is sure to be a unique gameplay experience.
Summerland includes:
- An engrossing and intriguing 1.5 - 2 hour single-player story written by Conner Rush (Welcome to the Dreamscape).
- Beautiful visuals and design.
- A stellar voice cast featuring Ryan Beard, Rhys David, and Natalie Van Sistine.
- A haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Auric Echoes.
Hi! This is Conner. I just wanted to say that this game was very much made as a way to deal with some really intense existential fears of death. This was just sort of my way of coping with those big ideas. Even if those fears or how personal this game is to me isn't very apparent in your playthrough, just know that it's a project that really meant a lot to me and made me feel a bit of comfort. I hope that if you struggle with these same fears, you'll find comfort in it as well.
All music in Summerland is original. You are more than welcome to record / stream your playthrough.
