Evaluation

Tank Squad launched on May 8, 2025 and has been receiving a consistent stream of substantial updates ever since. Major content milestones include: Update 1.1.0 (June 26, 2025) adding a Soviet mini-campaign with five missions; Update 1.2.0 (February 20, 2026) delivering a full UI overhaul and Steam Workshop modding tools; Update 1.3.0 (May 8, 2026) introducing procedurally generated missions on the game's first anniversary; and Update 1.3.1 (June 25, 2026) adding the Ballistics Lab, new weather systems, and extended commander controls. Smaller patches have continued at a high cadence through August and September 2026, with Patch 1.3.5 shipping on August 21 and Patch 1.3.7 on September 4, 2026. The most significant development as of today is the official announcement of the Ponyri 1943 paid DLC. In Development Status #95 (September 11, 2026 — just one day ago), the developer formally unveiled the DLC's scope: a brand-new 24×24 km theater of operations divided into 20 sectors, a nonlinear campaign driven by an AI commander who oversees enemy armored operations, two new vehicles (the SU-152 and Ferdinand tank destroyer), mobile repair and resupply units, and a tactical map for planning attacks and defenses. The developer is actively working on the DLC's Steam store page. They also note that active development continues on performance optimizations (CPU physics LOD system, infantry animation improvements) planned for Q4 2026. The developer characterizes the Ponyri DLC as "the first — and possibly the last — conventional expansion for Tank Squad on this scale," while also noting they "still have one or two ideas for additional DLC" that may follow. DeGenerals continues to communicate openly and frequently, maintaining a publishing cadence of roughly one post every 1–3 weeks. The studio attended Gamescom 2026 in August to seek business partners for further development. Despite being transparent about past commercial struggles, they have kept up a strong update cadence throughout the game's life.

About this game

Tank Squad is a tactical-combat action game, where you take command of your tank squad and lead it during tank battles of World War II. Take part in historical battles, set in linear campaigns, alone or with up to three friends. Each player can control his own tank or be a part of your tank crew.

Each battle is a separate mission in the campaign, with separate objectives that you need to achieve to win the battle. Plan ahead of your strategy and tactics, use infantry, artillery and air support when it is available. Minimize your losses, to be prepared properly for the final battle of the campaign.

While playing the campaign missions, tanks can be damaged or lost during the battles. Try to pull as many tanks as possible back to the repair station, whether they are your own or your enemies. While the tanks are being repaired, work together to get them back into action faster.

  • Repair damages taken during battle

  • Replenish tank ammo (main gun and machine guns)

  • Refuel vehicles

Manage your squads. Replace the deceased or destroyed units in squads. Create new squads and assign any units from the pool automatically or manually.

Play skirmish or procedural missions with up to 3 friends, use tank radio to communicate and give out orders to coordinate your squad.

Play in either total control mode or multi-crew mode. Other players can join your tank and you play as a crew member rather than controlling the entire tank yourself.

To be successful in battle, this mode requires good communication and coordination as a crew.

Our vehicles are based on construction documents, expert opinions and insights from documentations. Our aim is to provide a realistic gaming experience, whilst making certain simplifications to the mechanics.
