Evaluation

Taphouse VR launched into 1.0 on September 27, 2018. The original developer studio (Catland) wound down shortly after, and the game entered a long period of preservation-only stewardship by the original CEO, Tomi Toikka, who purchased the IP to keep it available on Steam. On December 30, 2023, Toikka published a candid retrospective marking the game's sixth anniversary, releasing a free soundtrack DLC and explaining that Catland was defunct, that a sequel had been cancelled, and that he was too busy with his new studio (Makea Games) to update the game. He described it as a preserved classic rather than an active project. However, the story didn't end there. On May 8, 2026, Toikka announced he was resurrecting the Catland brand to publish new games. Then on May 15, 2026, he announced a major free update for Taphouse VR — one of the most significant in the game's history. This upcoming update will rename the game to simply "Taphouse," completely rewrite the codebase, add OpenXR support for modern standalone VR headsets (including the Steam Frame), introduce three brand-new taverns (bringing the total to eight), add a new Career Mode progression system, add new dwarves and drink recipes, overhaul performance and visuals, and upgrade the existing Fidget Spinner DLC to a "Supporter's Pack" with additional bonuses. The developer confirmed the update is targeting a release by the end of 2026. A free demo is also planned to launch alongside the update. This is a confirmed, detailed, developer-announced update with a named target window — the game is actively being developed again after a period of dormancy.
Evidence
Developer confirms a major free update coming later in 2026, rebranding the game to 'Taphouse', adding three new taverns, Career Mode, OpenXR support, new dwarves and recipes, a completely rewritten codebase, and standalone VR headset support. A free demo and upgraded Supporter's Pack DLC are also planned.

About this game

READY. SET. SERVE!

In Taphouse VR, you are the bartender! Pour glasses, mugs and shots of all kinds of beverages to thirsty dwarves. Mix and match recipes to make drinks that dazzle your patrons. Be careful with your customers - some will get angry if served the wrong thing or if you take your time. Get ready to break up some fights as well! With an exciting cast of drunk dwarves and a cast of lovely drinking holes to work in you'll get to experience what it truly feels like to be a tavernkeep. And when your mind starts to wander, play the slot machine or throw out some troublemakers!

FEATURES

  • 🍺 Use your motion controllers to pour drinks to glasses, operate the taps and to send away customers too drunk to stand!

  • 🍷 All kinds of drinks like tap beer, rum, long drink, cola, milk, energy drinks, vodka and more to pour for your thirsty customers!

  • 🍹 Make recipe drinks to earn more tips - Cuba Libre, Tequila Sunrise, White Russian...we've got quite the collection!

  • 🥂 Mess around the counter with plenty of stuff to fiddle with, including your paying patrons!

  • 💲 Earn gold by being fast, efficient and careful when serving - spend your hard earned extra coins on the slot machine and win big!

  • 🤔 Intelligent drunkard AI knows to start fights, argue over the slot machines and drink until they pass out!

  • 👌 Two game modes: do a real shift in Bartender Mode or go with Sandbox Mode if you feel like playing around (or showing off)!

Note: While Taphouse VR is a perfect entry point for VR, we highly recommend it for older audiences. There's lots of alcohol, dwarves passing out and even some mild fisticuffs about - VR responsibly.
