The Backrooms Game FREE Edition

The Backrooms Game FREE Edition launched on Steam on July 25, 2019 as a free-to-play game. It received several patches and balance updates through August 2019, after which developer communications became sparse. The game's store page explicitly states that a paid FULL Edition is currently in development and planned to release into Early Access. The developer's most recent post, published on May 26, 2023, addressed concerns about abandonment and confirmed the FULL Edition is still being made. However, it also revealed significant delays: the project was ported from Unity to Unreal Engine and a late 2023 target was pushed to late 2026. No further updates have been posted since that May 2023 announcement. Because the developer last communicated on May 26, 2023 — more than three years before today's date of June 18, 2026 — and the promised late 2026 Early Access launch is now imminent with no recent confirmation of progress, the status of the FULL Edition is uncertain. The FREE Edition itself appears to be a static, complete product, but the broader project (the FULL Edition it is meant to lead into) is in an ambiguous state given the prolonged silence.
