The Mortuary Assistant launched on Steam on August 2, 2022 and received consistent post-launch updates including seasonal content, localization, new endings, and quality-of-life improvements through 2022 and 2023. On August 2, 2024, the developer released The Mortuary Assistant: Definitive Edition — a free update for existing PC and Switch owners that added new haunt events, new bodies, an embalming-only mode, lore, and performance improvements. In the announcement, the developer was explicit that the Definitive Edition represents the game in the state they are "most happy laying to rest" and that they were turning their focus toward their next project, Paranormal Activity: Threshold. A January 17, 2026 developer post confirmed that the developer is actively working on Paranormal Activity, further reinforcing the transition away from The Mortuary Assistant. A minor bug fix was posted on May 6, 2025, but that reflects routine maintenance rather than new content development. The only DLC on record is the soundtrack, which was released at launch. No new content for The Mortuary Assistant has been announced, and the developer has clearly communicated that the Definitive Edition marks the end of meaningful content development for this title.

About this game
Having completed your degree in mortuary sciences, you have taken on an apprenticeship at River Fields Mortuary. Over the past several months you have logged many hours aiding the Mortician in daily tasks along with learning the ins and outs of the embalming process as well as how to properly handle and care for the deceased.
Late one night, you are called into work to handle some embalmings. Death doesn’t keep day time hours. But there is something different about these bodies because there is something different about you. The phone rings with the Mortician on the other end. The rumors are true, and you can not leave.
