The Sims 4 is a free-to-play game that operates as an ever-expanding platform. Maxis has released 112 paid DLC items on Steam, ranging from large expansion packs to smaller cosmetic kits, and shows no signs of slowing down. In 2025 and 2026 alone, major expansions shipped on February 12, 2026 (Royalty & Legacy), July 10, 2025 (Enchanted by Nature), and October 2, 2025 (Adventure Awaits), alongside a steady stream of kits and stuff packs. The most recent DLC dropped on July 23, 2026 (Music Den Kit). Alongside paid content, Maxis ships free base game updates on a regular cadence. A July 21, 2026 patch introduced Autosave, Memory Boost, new culturally-inspired accessories, and bug fixes. A developer post from July 14, 2026 explicitly confirmed that a further quality-of-life update focused on Sim autonomy is coming in September 2026. And as of August 18, 2026 — just one day before today's assessment — Maxis announced two new kits (Mean Girls Capsule Kit and Clueless Capsule Kit) launching on August 27, 2026. This is a game designed to receive content indefinitely. There is no "complete" state for The Sims 4; it functions as an ongoing content platform with both paid DLC and free updates releasing continuously.
