Evaluation
Three Kingdoms of China (中华三国志) is a free, open-source strategy game made by a volunteer team. It went on sale on Steam on March 30, 2019, and its three DLC packs followed in April 2019 and January 2020. The team is now building a major update called version 1.26. On May 5, 2026, it published a flowchart and outline for that update covering a facility redesign with three upgrade levels, historical hermits and physicians such as Hua Tuo who wander the map as non-player characters, a reworked title system, a city-level resource and trade economy, and a redesigned diplomacy system, while stating the outline is not the final version. On October 8, 2026, the developer reported on progress: character status and tavern interaction features left over from the previous version have been implemented, parts of the code have been refactored in stages, a new version of the scenario editor has been built, and portrait fixes are complete. No release date for version 1.26 has been given. An April 8, 2026 statement set a multi-year direction: gradually refactoring the core code, pausing new features to focus on enriching content such as historical and random faction events, and reworking existing mechanics. The same statement said the team can no longer maintain the DLC packs and will remove them from sale, leaving only the base game; older versions remain available through the developer's forum. An October 26, 2025 post disclosed a team restructuring and said the 2025 update might not happen, but the April and October 2026 posts show the work has continued with new programmers joining the team. The developer repeatedly notes that progress is slow because all members work on the project in their spare time.
