Evaluation

Tyr is a free-to-play multiplayer tank shooter that launched into Early Access on September 2, 2026, after more than three years of private playtesting. The developer, Stoke Games, has been very transparent about where the game stands: Early Access is explicitly described as "the next step," not the finish line, and the studio has stated it has "a long road ahead and big plans for Tyr." Several elements of the game are demonstrably unfinished at launch. Some tanks are still in an internal "Alpha Program," meaning they use work-in-progress 3D models and don't yet have final voice-over recorded. The developer has already flagged the ping wheel and clan systems as starting points that will be expanded based on feedback. The studio has also communicated an expectation of roughly 12 months in Early Access before a full release, though they noted that timeline can change. The game's update history leading up to Early Access shows a highly active development team. In the months before launch, the developer shipped regular feature patches adding new tanks, new maps, a ranking system, vehicle mastery levels, a clans system, custom game support, and ongoing balance improvements — all at a consistent cadence driven by community feedback. Stoke Games sells only cosmetics (the Founder's Pack and in-game gold for skins/charms) and has explicitly stated there are no pay-to-win elements, no premium ammunition, and no battle pass. The game is free to play. Anyone waiting for a more complete version of Tyr should expect continued development through Early Access, with the developer targeting a full launch in roughly 12 months from the September 2026 Early Access date.

About this game

This is Tyr, a tank shooter where positioning, strategic decision-making, and mastery of unique abilities win.

TANKS

Tyr features a roster of specialized armored vehicles and pilots. You’ll take control of treaded and hover tanks alike as you angle & position for defense, and rumble and glide across the battlefield.

CUSTOMIZATION

Each vehicle also offers its own tech tree and ammo & component slots, affording you the ability to upgrade and evolve your ride to suit your playstyle. You may even be able to change up your vehicle’s unique keystone tech to dynamically alter your personal meta.

ABILITIES

Each vehicle features a unique power that impacts Tyr’s moment-to-moment play on the battlefield. A tank may have the ability to blink several vehicle lengths forward or back, send out a sonar pulse to spot enemies, or overcharge its engine to ram directly into an opponent and deal massive damage.

ASYMMETRIC VISION

In Tyr, you and your opponents will only be visible when within range or while making enough noise. Deciding when to push forward and when to fire from cover could mean the difference between staying hidden and revealing your position to the entire enemy team, so play carefully.

STRATEGY

Tyr will test your mental mettle, patience, and teamwork, as deliberate play beats whoever can fire the fastest.

FEATURES

  • Multiplayer tank shooter - Engage in strategic team battles with heavy-armored vehicles

  • A roster of heavy armor - Tanks in Tyr each feature a unique armor profile that you can angle and position to deflect enemy shots in the heat of battle

  • Keystone tech variations - Max level your tank to unlock meta-changing tech

  • Asymmetric vision - Position yourself correctly, and you’ll see the enemy and spot them for your team, while the enemy can't see you in return

  • Unique vehicle abilities- Each tank has a distinct ability that makes moment-to-moment play more high-stakes and interesting

  • Strategy beats twitch reflexes - Run and gun gameplay gets punished by careful positioning and slow, deliberately placed shots to disable enemies
