Evaluation

UnderRail launched on December 18, 2015 and has been actively supported ever since. Two paid expansions have shipped: Expedition (July 22, 2019) and Heavy Duty (November 1, 2023). Both are fully released with no unreleased DLC entries on the store. In January 2022, the developer announced that the last major free content update for UnderRail had shipped and that roughly 95% of studio capacity would shift to their next project, UnderRail 2: Infusion. Importantly, they also explicitly committed to continued support: periodic small content updates, new items, new abilities, and potential future paid DLC — "as long as we exist as a company." That commitment has been honored. On December 18, 2025, the developer shipped the 10-Year Anniversary Update (v1.3), which added unique weapon sprites, a new rocket launcher to the Heavy Duty arsenal, and began work on localization support. This was followed by a feature patch on February 13, 2026 adding a custom difficulty system and re-enabling the game console. On that same date, the developer noted that approximately 98% of production is focused on UnderRail 2: Infusion — and active Infusion dev logs confirm that (the most recent is March 10, 2026). As of today, October 8, 2026, the last confirmed update to UnderRail 1 was the February 13, 2026 feature patch — roughly 8 months ago. The developer's established post-2022 pattern for UnderRail 1 is periodic smaller updates rather than a fixed cadence, with notable milestones like the 10th anniversary driving activity. The developer has made no statement indicating that support has ended, and their January 2022 commitment to ongoing support remains the most recent relevant declaration. Given the explicit, open-ended support commitment and the recent track record of updates, the game continues to receive content development.

10-Year Anniversary Update (v1.3) shipped, adding unique weapon sprites, a new rocket launcher for Heavy Duty, and beginning localization support. Developer confirmed more localization work will continue 'in slow but active development over the next year.'

About this game

Underrail is an old-school turn-based isometric indie role-playing game that focuses on exploration and combat.

The game is set in a distant future, when life on the Earth’s surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.

The player takes control of one of the denizens of such a station-state whose life is about to become all that much more interesting and dangerous, as our protagonist is caught amidst the conflicting factions of the Underrail as they violently struggle to survive in the harsh underground environment.

COMBAT

The game's turn-based combat features many different weapon types - pistols, rifles, crossbows, energy weapons, sledgehammers, knives and more, each with their own advantages and drawbacks.

PSIONICS

The player is also able to learn powerful psionic abilities from one of the three psionic schools:

  • Metathermics - Burn your enemies alive or freeze them to death.

  • Psychokinesis - Use the power of telekinesis for offensive or defensive purposes or electrocute your foes.

  • Thought Control - Assault the minds of your enemies by overloading them, instilling overwhelming fear, creating deadly hallucinations and more.

SUBTERFUGE

For those looking to avoid direct confrontation, the game offers a set of subterfuge skills. Move around the world in stealth like a shadow, lockpicking doors and hacking computers. If people have something you want, you can often just pickpocket them. But if it does come to blows, you can use devious traps to stack the odds in your favour.

CRAFTING

Underrail features an elaborate item crafting system. A vast majority of the armor, weapons and some other items encountered in the game can be crafted, and some are exclusively acquired through it. Crafted equipment tends to be superior to that which is scavenged or purchased in terms of raw numbers, provided you are investing in your crafting skills.
