Evaluation

Universe Sandbox has been in Early Access since August 24, 2015, and the developer continues to treat it as an unfinished, actively evolving product — there is no indication of an imminent 1.0 release. Development remains highly active. Major content updates have shipped at a consistent pace: the next-generation graphics engine (Update 35, March 3, 2025), supernova lighting and stellar surface detail (Update 35.2, June 17, 2025), a complete physics architecture overhaul using Unity's DOTS framework (Update 36, March 30, 2026), the Artemis II mission simulation with the Orion spacecraft (Update 36.1, April 29, 2026), and atmospheric winds and other physics improvements (Update 36.2, June 25, 2026). That's nine major content updates visible in the post history, with multiple feature patches and bug fixes in between. The most recent developer communication was June 25, 2026, just seven weeks before today's date, confirming ongoing development activity. On March 19, 2026, the developer published a "2026 & Beyond" roadmap explicitly naming substantial features still in development: planet-scale life simulation (vegetation, herbivores, creature customization), spacecraft building, Dyson sphere construction and other megastructures, mobile expansion to iOS and Android, and continued DOTS physics overhaul phases covering surface simulation, collision physics, and Barnes-Hut gravity optimization. These are not vague aspirations — many include work-in-progress screenshots and detailed technical descriptions. In November 2025, the developer also posted a "Labor of Love" award nomination update directly listing features they are actively working on, describing over a decade of continuous development and expressing excitement about the future. The DOTS physics framework landed in Update 36 (March 2026) and is explicitly described as a foundation for future major features like spacecraft and megastructures — confirming that the recent major update was a stepping stone, not a conclusion. The roadmap makes clear the developer plans to continue rolling out DOTS improvements across surface simulation, collision systems, and graphics rendering in additional future phases.

About this game

Universe Sandbox is a realistic physics-based space simulator that allows you to create, destroy, and interact on an unimaginable scale.

It merges real-time gravity, climate, collision, and material interactions to reveal the beauty of our universe and the fragility of our planet.

Simulate Gravity

N-body simulation at almost any speed using Newtonian mechanics. Real science, real physics, no supercomputer required.

Collide Planets & Stars

Epic, mind blowing collisions of massive planetary bodies that leave behind molten craters.

Create Your Own Systems

Start with a star, then add a planet. Spruce it up with moons, rings, comets, or even a black hole.

Model Planetary Climate

Watch sea ice grow and recede with the seasons because of a planet’s tilt - change the tilt and change the seasons. Or move planets close to a star and see the oceans boil away as the surface heats up.

Supernova a Star

Watch a supernova unfold by colliding two stars, cranking up their mass, or making them explode at your whim.

Explore Historical Events

Hitch a ride with spacecraft including Juno and New Horizons, or view a total solar eclipse.

And more...

  • Build and terraform planets with 12 materials, including water, oxygen, & carbon dioxide

  • Stellar flares & volatile trails

  • Procedurally generated planets, stars, & galaxies

  • Pulsars

  • Light-warping black holes

  • Epic space lasers

  • Shape oceans & mountains on planet surfaces

  • Spin planets apart with centrifugal force

  • Original soundtrack by Macoubre

  • Support for 20+ languages

  • Share & explore simulations on Steam Workshop
