Variables launched on July 30, 2019 and received a burst of active development in its first few months — multiple feature patches adding new turrets, equipment, game modes, and systems through October 2019. In July 2021, the developer posted a candid Q&A (NEWS-3) explaining that Variables had not reached the vision they had for it, and that rather than updating the original game, they built a sequel — Variables 2 — which was released on August 31, 2021 (NEWS-4). This effectively marks the end of content development for the original Variables, as the developer explicitly redirected their efforts to the sequel. Since then, the developer's studio has moved on further still, announcing and releasing a third game, "Esport Godfather," with its Steam page going up in July 2023 (NEWS-2) and the game launching in January 2024 (NEWS-1). There has been no post-launch content activity for Variables since the sequel launched in August 2021, and no announcements of any future updates, DLC, or continued development for this title. The game shipped as a self-contained experience and its development concluded when the studio transitioned to Variables 2.
