Evaluation

Virtual Towers Online is a free-to-play fan-made replica of the Alton Towers theme park that launched on Steam on December 24, 2024. The developer is explicit in the store description that this is "an ongoing work-in-progress game so many features will change over time and get added or removed," and outlines significant unshipped goals including a full multiplayer environment and a career mode. Since launch through late March 2025, the developer shipped at least four major content updates: Build 1.0.1423 (January 6, 2025), Build 1.0.1647 (March 4, 2025), a big UE4.27 update including scare mazes (March 13, 2025), and Build 1.0.1698 (March 24, 2025). These were accompanied by multiple feature patches and bug fixes throughout the same period — a very active update cadence of roughly one major content drop every 3–4 weeks in early 2025. In March 2025, the developer announced that work has officially begun in Unreal Engine 5.5, signaling a substantial engineering undertaking still in progress. News posts note upcoming content ("exciting things are coming" for the Dark Forest area), and the store description continues to reference unshipped features like multiplayer and career mode. With the last recorded developer communication on March 26, 2025 and a historical cadence of very frequent updates, today's date of September 17, 2026 — approximately 18 months of silence — does represent a gap that exceeds the established pattern. However, the store description still actively describes the game as an "ongoing work-in-progress" with stated future goals, and there is no developer statement indicating development has concluded. The silence is notable and worth monitoring, but the developer's own store page explicitly commits to ongoing development.

About this game

Virtual Towers Online is an unofficial free-to-play realistic, to-scale replica of the Alton Towers theme park created in the Unreal engine. It is designed to be as close as possible using architectural plans and thousands of photo references. It has been in development for over 10+ years with a very small team, allowing players to roam freely around the park riding and getting to operate some of the available attractions in the game.

Please note! This is an ongoing work-in-progress game so many features will change over time and get added or removed. There is a key shown on the maps in the game that shows which rides are available to ride and what kind of operation mode they have, for example, "Nemesis" is fully automatic so players can ride it without interacting with it, or can take complete control to operate it, whereas "Ripsaw" has only a manual control mode and whilst can be ridden, has no auto mode.

There are likely to be bugs within the builds despite our best attempts at trying to remove any possibility of any issues you may experience however being such a small team, things get missed. It is unoptimized, we know it has a long way to go but it will take time with so few people working it, please give us a chance!

The end goal is to have a multi-player environment where users from all over the world can interact with each other throughout the entire park, players can take on roles at attractions to operate it together, as well as a career mode where skills are developed while playing.
