Evaluation

Welcome to Elk is a narrative adventure game that launched on September 17, 2020. It shipped as a complete, self-contained story — a biographical adventure based on real people's real stories. There is no season pass, no announced DLC beyond a soundtrack (which released October 16, 2020), and no developer roadmap indicating future story content. Post-launch activity consisted of maintenance and platform support: a Linux/Apple Silicon patch in February 2022, and a follow-up bug fix in March 2022. These updates addressed technical issues rather than adding new game content. The most notable post-launch development was Triple Topping shifting focus to their next game, Dead Pets Unleashed, which they announced in August 2022 via the Welcome to Elk Steam page. This signals that the studio's creative energy moved on from Elk after launch. In May 2024, Akupara Games announced they had taken over as publisher for Welcome to Elk, keeping the game available and supported — but this was a business handover, not an indication of new content. The last developer communication of any kind was that May 2024 publisher announcement. No new content has been announced or hinted at for the game. Given that Welcome to Elk was conceived as a complete, story-driven experience based on a fixed set of real-life tales, and the developer has since released a follow-up title, the game is best understood as having shipped complete at launch on September 17, 2020.

About this game

True stories told by real people.

Frigg has a lot to learn in the small town of Elk after life in the big city! An apprenticeship as a carpenter, a group of new, complicated friends, and a town predisposed to all kinds of difficult relationships. But they're going to find their way just like all the other off-beat immigrants to the island of Elk. It's how life is across the water.

And just as they have fun exploring all the little nooks and crannies of an old, storied island and its old, storied people, Frigg will face some tough decisions, some heartwrenching situations and a the kind of heartbreak that sits with you forever. Whether it's playing cards for candy, getting their feet wet at the beach or just sitting down to listen to a story well-told, Elk will be an adventure that Frigg will cherish for the rest of their days.

The stories in Welcome to Elk are told by the people who we know and/or were there when the events took place. All are told from memory. The way they are used both on our webpage and in the game is true to the core story but everything like names, locations and other details are changed, renamed and often re-framed to protect the real people behind them, therefore, we call them tall tales. The stories are not one-to-one like you would experience in true crime for example. They are rewritten and combined to one linear narrative. Characters may play a role in one story where they were not a part of it originally and only us who designed it will ever know – or come close to the real truth of the stories.

Welcome to Elk might look like a “fun” game but it’s about telling stories – some are filled with humour, others are dark, but they go hand in hand.
