Evaluation

White Knuckle is a first-person roguelite speed-climbing game currently in Early Access, with Dark Machine Games actively building toward a 1.0 release. The game launched into Early Access on April 17, 2025, and has maintained a consistent cadence of major campaign updates roughly every 3–5 months since then: The Abyss (September 29, 2025), The Chimney seasonal update (December 16, 2025), the Anniversary Update (April 17, 2026), The Nest (June 25, 2026), and today — September 24, 2026 — the Shortcuts and Accessibility Update (Beta 0.61). The September 24, 2026 update post is explicit about what comes next: "White Knuckle's penultimate region: THE CORE, has been in heavy development and if all goes well we plan to release before the end of this year." After The Core ships, the developer confirms they will then begin work on the "FINAL REGION" and White Knuckle's 1.0 release. This means at minimum two more major milestones — The Core and the final region — stand between the current version and completion. The same post also notes that the new Forward+ rendering system will become the default by the next major update, and that additional accessibility settings are still planned "on the road to 1.0," reinforcing that development is ongoing across multiple fronts. Between major updates, the team has maintained a steady flow of feature patches and bug fixes (most recently Beta 0.60h on July 21, 2026 and Beta 0.60g on July 10, 2026), demonstrating consistent engagement with the product. The game currently sits at 97% positive reviews from nearly 15,000 ratings, reflecting strong player reception throughout development.

About this game

White Knuckle is a first person roguelite speed-climbing game.

Use momentum-based movement mechanics with precision, deploy a variety of tools and resources, and ascend as fast as you can.

Just don't lose your grip, there’s eternity below you.

Manage your inventory or become encumbered and fall to your death. Failure to grab what you need from your bag in time can spell disaster.

Through run-based meta-progression, you’ll discover and unlock varied augmentations.

Bolster your will to ascend.

You're not alone down here. Strange life flourishes far underground, and darker things haunt these halls. Something oozes from the depths– following you, growing angrier… and it won't let up.

Travel through different regions with unique threats and gameplay challenges during your attempted escape of the underground megastructure.

The deep dry storage of the Silos, the putrid sewers of the Pipeworks, the haunted piers of Habitation. Each area will require adaptation to new obstacles and denizens.
