Wrench

Wrench

Early access since Dec 2018

Wrench is a mechanic simulator where players prepare and maintain race cars. The parts in Wrench are the most detailed of any game in the genre. Extreme attention has been paid to even the smallest components, including fasteners which are accurate to the thread pitch and install torque.

Evaluation

Wrench has been in Early Access since December 2018 and remains firmly mid-development, with the developer actively building toward a 1.0 release that has not yet arrived. The most recent communication is a September 29, 2026 development update announcing that Missing Digit has written a full driving simulation for Wrench. The update describes cars built from thousands of simulated parts that physically wear as you drive, an expanded residential neighborhood with over 12 miles of drivable roads, and multiplayer driving support. Critically, the developer is explicit that a release build is not yet ready — the team has a list of outstanding tasks including reworking the new-player introduction, fixing early friction points, and delivering a first version of progression before they can ship. Prior to this, the August 2025 major update moved engine starting to the main branch for the first time, while acknowledging that fuel/air simulation and the combustion system were still incomplete. Bug fixes followed in September 2025, and the store description continues to note that the most current work lives in a beta branch with the team "working towards something much more structured soon." The developer has been consistent and transparent about the scope of what remains: a complete running-condition simulation, a structured game loop built around lap time targets and car-building challenges, performance tuning systems, and an overhauled new-player experience. Development is clearly active and ongoing, with the September 2026 update representing the most recent of a steady stream of communications and milestones stretching back through 2025 and 2024.
Evidence
Developer announces a completed driving simulation with part-level physics, 12+ miles of drivable roads, and multiplayer driving support. States a list of tasks remain before a build can be released, including reworking the intro experience and delivering a first version of progression.

Major update moves engine starting to the main branch for the first time, but developer explicitly states fuel/air simulation and ECU/combustion systems are unfinished. Describes the build as 'a first look' at where Wrench is headed, not the full game loop they are building.

About this game

Wrench is a mechanic simulation with a focus on motorsports. We are in a period of transition to new game systems and a new game loop. The most up to date work on the game is in the beta branch which can be accessed by right clicking on the Wrench in your Steam library and navigating to the betas tab. The Beta now supports co-op multiplayer in desktop and VR play modes. This build is a sandbox but we are working towards something much more structured soon. For more details see our recent update post.

Players in Wrench use a variety of tools to disassemble and repair an extremely detailed car assembly. There are three chassis currently offered in the game. A hatchback streetcar, and two licensed kit cars. Our philosophy behind Wrench is to allow players to fail, get lost, and do things incorrectly. We use limited 2d UI and prefer world interactions. There is no automated inventory system, players must keep track of all of their parts, and we provide organizational tools to help players manage their spaces. The garage space has customizable workbenches, flooring, and storage.

Wrench is a traditional desktop keyboard and mouse game with a VR mode for Oculus, Index, WMR, Vive, and Vive Cosmos (experimental).
