Evaluation

XO has been in Early Access since December 2019 and remains there. The developer — a solo developer at Jumpdrive Studios — has shipped seven major content updates during Early Access, the most recent being version 1.49 ("Antepenultimatesimal") on January 20, 2025, which introduced initial modding support, five new ships, expanded events, and a wide range of quality-of-life improvements. A bug-fix update (v1.49f) followed on June 26, 2025, resolving a long-standing crash affecting Nvidia RTX 30xx/40xx graphics cards. That June 2025 post explicitly states that "more modding support, some visual improvements and more surprises" are planned next. The January 2025 major update post specifically announced that version 1.50 will open the game to significantly deeper modding — including custom events, custom 3D ship models, and total conversions — and confirmed that more ships and content are coming before the full release of XO. The developer has consistently communicated plans for a 1.0 launch and continues to work toward it with clearly stated upcoming deliverables. As of today, October 8, 2026, the last developer communication was on June 26, 2025 — approximately 15 months ago. While the update cadence for major releases has historically been roughly 6–13 months apart, the gap since the last communication is notable. However, the developer left explicit commitments in place (v1.50 modding expansion, more ships, more content, full release) and has not posted anything to indicate those plans have changed. Given the outstanding commitments and the developer's consistent track record through multiple years of updates, the game remains in Early Access with content actively planned ahead of a 1.0 launch.

About this game

In XO you're on the run and must amass a fleet powerful enough to save humanity. Seize cargo, weapons and ships by force -- or use diplomacy and make sacrifices to gain trust among the factions. The choice is yours.

On each unique run you'll encounter ships under distress, desperate refugees, greedy merchants, pirates, wreckage. There are caches to loot, shipyards and stations, enemy traps... and much more.

Each ship you add to your fleet reduces your dwindling resources, but adds unique abilities. Warships add firepower, Farmships feed your fleet, Industryships add manufacturing, research and repair capabilities, and Cargoships increase your fleet's storage capacity.

As your fleet grows you must also navigate treacherous political scenarios. How will you deal with infighting, sabotage, and the misunderstandings that come from cramming together people of opposing factions? Do you rule with an iron fist, try to bring opposing factions together, favor a particular faction, or carefully manipulate the factions to keep a balance? You decide.

Use your resources to upgrade ships, create trade items, manufacture weapons, and make critical repairs. Resources are automatically gathered, but the ships in your fleet influence your gathering rates and capacity -- as do different planet types.

Your exodus will take you to many worlds. You'll come across habitable worlds, gas giants, airless rocks, frozen wastelands, and hellish molten planets. Most can be tapped for the precious resources you need to survive... provided you have the right ships in your fleet. Others... well, let's hope you've prepared.
