Evaluation

AfterWar, developed solo by Dmytro Lumen, has just reached its full 1.0 release on July 31, 2026 — today's date. The game spent several years in beta development, with major updates like Beta 0.4 (November 2023) and Beta 0.5 (October 2024) progressively adding core systems. Throughout 2025, the developer was actively preparing for the 1.0 launch, posting an announcement series beginning July 14, 2025 detailing features like 190-language support, and sharing a preview of the redesigned 1.0 map in November 2025. The game has now launched as version 1.0, delivering on the content that was announced across those previews. Because this is a brand-new launch with no post-1.0 developer communications yet, it is too early to determine whether the developer plans further content updates now that 1.0 is out.

About this game

A Simple Game, Packed with Content

My opinion as a developer, and especially as a player of popular grand strategy games, is that in order to enjoy the game, you shouldn't have to spend every session thinking about army templates, your ideology, and dozens of other parameters. It gets exhausting, and it becomes quite difficult to simply play and relax after work or school. It is especially difficult to invite a friend and just play together, because it can be hard to quickly explain the basics, while fully mastering the game's mechanics can take dozens or even hundreds of hours. BUT I'm not talking about a casual grand strategy game that has been simplified to the extreme!

Animated battles, realistic troop numbers for different countries, and a frontline management system are key features of AfterWar, complemented by what is most interesting for players who enjoy grand strategy games — the ability to carry out your own military tactics, for example by encircling hundreds of thousands of enemy troops and cutting them off from supplies coming from the capital. All of this is present in AfterWar, along with air support for troops and realistic population growth depending on the level of stability in the country.

Guides for the game are available on the game's website, as well as on the game's YouTube channel!

Friendly Interaction

Trade that can grow into an alliance with another country! You will be able to fight alongside your allies and share money with each other. Trade requires an available land or sea route. You will be able to block these routes for your enemies with your fleet, creating a military and economic blockade, because all of their trade and troop transportation will be blocked. Members of alliances automatically participate in each other's wars. On many map types, you will be able to see your country's trade routes, as well as the trade routes of other countries.

Multiplayer!

You can play with your friends! Connections work through Steam and local networks. You can use any method to simulate a local network — everything will work. Moreover, the game is fully cross-platform: you can play on PC, transfer your save to your phone (instructions are available on the game's website), and continue playing there. You can also connect from your phone to a server running on a PC!

AfterWar supports 191 languages!
