Evaluation

Brigand: Oaxaca released on July 11, 2017 and has received sustained post-launch support from its solo developer, Brian J. Lancaster, for nearly a decade. All four DLC packs have shipped: Brigand: Panama (October 2019), Brigand: Extras (November 2019), Brigand: Nightmare (June 2021), and Brigand: Battles (October 2022). Even with all DLC shipped, the developer has continued delivering updates at a consistent pace. The most recent Brigand-specific update, Version 18.7 on September 18, 2026, added a new Waterwalking spell to the Nightmare and Battles DLCs, new secrets reachable only with that spell, a Russian translation of the FORTRESS challenge map (contributed by SXD Media), expanded language code support for 20 languages, and several bug fixes. This arrived just five days before today's assessment date. The prior Brigand patch, Version 18.4 on July 10, 2026, added advanced team commands, a new script boolean, and a collection of bug fixes. Critically, the developer explicitly stated in that July post: "I'm still stacking cheese from this game, so there will be another update after Warlordocracy Ch.6 is finished." This is a direct statement of intent to continue updating Brigand. The developer regularly cross-posts Warlordocracy development news to the Brigand feed, which accounts for several of the recent posts. This is an established pattern and does not indicate Brigand has been sidelined — the developer returns to Brigand between Warlordocracy development cycles, and has done so repeatedly. No statement of completion has been made for Brigand: Oaxaca. The developer's own words confirm further updates are coming.
Evidence
Version 18.7 shipped a new Waterwalking spell for Nightmare and Battles DLCs, new secrets, a Russian translation of the FORTRESS map, and expanded language code support — the most recent Brigand-specific update.

About this game

BRIGAND: OAXACA is a highly difficult RPG/FPS set in post-apocalyptic Mexico. The story will take you from a banana plantation to dark toxic caverns, to the sprawling city of Pochutla, to the flooded coastline, to deadly demon-infested jungles, and more.

There are 14 unique skills to upgrade with skill points, ranging from agility to firearms, hacking, hardware, voodoo. Unlock up to 80 special abilities that allow you to do things such as throw your weapon, upgrade your guns, and control the weather.

Dangers include rival tribes fighting for fertile land, mutated ghouls that emerge from their caverns at night, vicious demons that hunger for your flesh, a flooded and irradiated coastline that eats away at civilization, as well as disease, insanity, and hunger.

You will die often, and you will like it.

Key Features:

- Branching story with dynamic characters, dialogue trees, teammates, and multiple endings

- Total freedom of movement and action: jump from roof to roof, steal things, blow things up, or murder friendly characters (if that's your thing)

- Extensive character customization with 14 skills to upgrade and over 80 abilities to unlock, ranging from firearms to crafting, hacking, and voodoo

- Crafting system largely based on the Anarchist's Cookbook: make various grenades from empty beer cans and the proper chems, etc.

- Recruit a team of up to 4 characters that you can command or control directly as the player

- Explore a vast region of Oaxaca, taking you from a banana plantation, into toxic caverns, bustling cities, disease-ridden jungles, a flooded coastline, and more

- Completely versatile world editor, allowing you to edit the story for fun, or make a completely new story with new skills, scripts, and imported assets

Modding Permissions:

You can sell your own mods for Brigand on any site you want and keep all the profit, as long as you include a link to the Brigand store page and do not include the EXE files in your download. Itch.io is a good place to sell mods. Let me know if you make one (you don't have to).

Linux/Deck Compatibility:

To run on most Linux systems, enable the Steam Proton 8.0-5 in the "compatibility" tab.

Everything loads much faster on Steam Deck if you launch in "Desktop Mode".
