Evaluation

Cliff Empire launched on August 6, 2019 and has been actively updated ever since by its solo developer at Lion's Shade. The game received a major graphics remaster in May 2022 (Update 1.20). Throughout 2024, updates arrived at a brisk pace: Update 1.36 (January 31, 2024), 1.37 (February 11, 2024), 1.39 (April 19, 2024), a substantial Update 1.40 on October 31, 2024 (adding new cliff types and turret upgrades — content the developer noted "could have been DLC"), 1.41 on December 24, 2024, and 1.42 on December 29, 2024. A Mac beta for 1.42 followed on January 21, 2025 — the most recent post in the data. This is a clear, sustained pattern of active development well after the 1.0 launch, spanning multiple years with no declared endpoint. In the October 31, 2024 post, the developer also mentioned that their companion project AI Olympius would be in an "intensive development phase for at least the next six months," which suggested some attention would shift to that project through mid-2025. However, the developer continued shipping Cliff Empire updates through January 2025, and has not announced that Cliff Empire development is concluding. As of today, October 8, 2026, the last known communication was January 21, 2025 — roughly 21 months ago. The developer's established 2024 update cadence was roughly every 1–3 months between feature patches. Silence of 21 months significantly exceeds that pattern. However, the developer explicitly noted in October 2024 that AI Olympius would demand intensive focus, which provides a plausible explanation for a slowdown. The developer never declared Cliff Empire complete, and the updates posted through early 2025 showed continued engagement. Given the extended silence against the established cadence, the situation is ambiguous — the active development pattern may have wound down naturally, or the developer may return to Cliff Empire after the AI Olympius development phase. There are no unreleased DLC entries, no announced future content, and no explicit completion statement, leaving the content status uncertain but most consistent with a game that has been actively developed and may have simply slowed without a formal conclusion.
