Evaluation
Colt Canyon launched on June 16, 2020 and has received a steady stream of updates from solo developer Jonathan (Retrific) over the years. Major content milestones include Update 1.1 on October 12, 2021 (melee overhaul, 50+ new weapons), the save system introduction in mid-2022, and the Horse Update (Patch 1.3) on October 12, 2024. Following that, a series of polish patches shipped through early 2025: Patch 1.3.1 on November 22, 2024, Patch 1.3.1.2 on January 20, 2025, Patch 1.3.1.3 on February 14, 2025, and finally Patch 1.3.1.4 on November 3, 2025.
The developer's own words tell the clearest story. In the Patch 1.3.1 post on November 22, 2024, Jonathan stated: "unless the game suddenly goes viral do not expect any more big patches for the game. It's time for me to move on to new projects. I cannot afford to spend more time on this game." Then, in the Patch 1.3.1.4 post on November 3, 2025 — the most recent communication — he followed up: "Overall I am happy with the state of the game though, so not much will change any time soon but as long as the game is alive I cannot quite leave it just yet." This last patch is framed as a minor fine-tuning effort driven by personal motivation, not as the start of a new content cycle. No future content, roadmap, or additional updates have been announced. The only DLC — the soundtrack — was released at launch.
The developer has communicated clearly that major development is winding down and that they are moving on to new projects. The November 2025 patch was a small, self-described maintenance effort. The game is effectively complete as a content package.
Evidence
Developer released Patch 1.3.1.4 with minor balancing tweaks, stating they are 'happy with the state of the game' and that 'not much will change any time soon,' framing this as a small personal effort rather than a commitment to ongoing content.
Developer explicitly stated: 'unless the game suddenly goes viral do not expect any more big patches for the game. It's time for me to move on to new projects. I cannot afford to spend more time on this game.'
