Evaluation

COVEN launched into Early Access on October 24, 2024 with its first episode — 10 levels of retro FPS action. The store page explicitly promises 2 more episodes to be released during Early Access, each set in a different time period. The developer (a solo dev) has been steadily working toward Episode 2 since launch, sharing development screenshots and system overhauls along the way. However, progress has been uneven. In August 2025, the developer announced Episode 2 would arrive in two parts — one later in 2025 and a second around spring 2026. That plan was then revised: on September 22, 2025, they began showcasing an improved gore and enemy AI system being built for Episode 2. By September 25, 2025, they decided to backport this new system into Episode 1 first, adding further delay. The most significant update came on May 20, 2026, when the developer disclosed that financial pressures — specifically needing home repairs — forced them to take a second day job a few months prior, grinding development to near-halt. They report that workload has since eased and development is resuming. They also revealed a structural change: what was previously planned as Episode 2 (the knight/fantasy storyline) will now be Episode 3, and Episode 2 will instead follow protagonist Amy to Victorian London with a new weapon set and magic system. Screenshots of Episode 2 work-in-progress were shared. Two of the originally promised episodes remain undelivered, and no release date has been given for either. The combination of a solo developer, demonstrated financial strain, and a missed 2025 target window means the timeline for completing the promised content is genuinely uncertain.
Evidence
Developer discloses they had to take a second day job due to home repair costs, slowing development significantly since early 2026. Reports things have eased and they are working on the game again. Episode 2 restructured to follow Amy in Victorian London; the knight/fantasy story becomes Episode 3.

About this game

Coven is a fast-paced retro fps/slasher where you take on the role of a young girl in an alternate 1600's who is wrongly accused of witchcraft and is burned at the stake. She's resurrected by an unknown force and seeks revenge. Her path of vengeance will take her across time and space.

In the first episode:

- Utilize an explosive mix of early modern period weaponry and magic

- Movement is key - dash, slide and slow down time in order to survive

- Eat the flesh of the newly deceased to regain health so you may continue on your path of rigorous vengeance

- Explore villages, temples, forests and different places in time to uncover the secrets of the old gods

- Soundtrack by John S. Weekley aka Primeval

2 more episodes will release during early access which will continue the story. Each set in a different time and place across history.
